On February 24, 2022, the world woke up to the news that Russia had launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This has led to one of the worst and largest refugee crises in history, with nearly nine million people displaced. Women and children are heavily overrepresented, as all men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been banned from leaving Ukraine in anticipation that they may be called up to fight.

The Polish border town of Medyka was one of the most used border crossings since the beginning of the invasion, where thousands of Ukrainian women and children crossed the border every day.
